The Langley Farm project began in summer 2020, with an intricate plan to create a home to support the next generation of family farmers. Located in the picturesque Cotswolds, the design was fundamental to blend in with the existing structures and scenery, requiring precise planning and expertise from Mon Timber.
Following the design brief from Cawdor and external architects at Ian O’Brien Studio, our joinery experts Rob Quantock and David Bushnell visited the site, to ensure delivery of a made-to-measure solution. Rob and David evaluated the plans and suggested constructive tweaks to maximise the potential of the tricky design and materials.
The house sits on a lower ground floor cast into the landscape, with a concrete structure joining the property from east to west, and a glass roof meeting the wings in the middle. Mon Timber’s role was integrating the ash glass stone and oak for the staircases.
The staircasing used walnut design strips in each tread, with each step floating in a stone that had to be individually cut and placed. Lighting was installed under each step and each staircase accompanied by a hand-crafted oak handrail.
Mon Timber’s work on the three staircases was integral in bringing together two wings and multiple floors; being an element that will be used by the inhabitants every day, it was very important that the tasks were handled with care and precision, resulting in the perfect design.
Mon Timber not only supplied the timber materials but gave their expert opinion on the practicalities of meshing the natural materials with the complex architectural vision, helping ensure success in the project.
Richard Wadley at Mon Timber said: “We’re so pleased that Cawdor chose to approach us, citing the reliability of our expertise to deliver such an ambitious project as the reason why they wanted to work us again. The design is very architecturally difficult, hence the amount of time we have spent on perfecting every element, and through close collaboration with Cawdor we overcame every challenge that came our way, excelling in delivering what was not an easy task.”
